Melody Gardot was left bedridden, neurally damaged, hypersensitive to light and sound, and in great pain from a bicycle accident. She was encouraged to integrate music as a part of her treatment plan to deal with her pain and her cognitive deficits. She went on to record three albums and create some of the most wonderful music one can ever dream of.

Green, lean, alive, and creating wholeness. CFLs, carbon credits, LCD monitors, timed devices. This would sum up the traditional paradigm of the man-environment matrix. Translate it to governance or a corporate-financial framework and we can still work within this paradigm. It is a very comforting one. We can, today, trade environment.

Doctus, a group of ITES/BPO units based in Hyderabad, set out in 2006 to redefine this understanding of the environment and to rethink what we can do to create the future we want . At the heart of this endeavor was the conviction that the environment, whether it be in administration of the land, education, business, or at the more simplistic level, in the fields of green and gold that embody the richness of our country, is but a reflection of our selves. Our actions create the environment we receive and are part of. In a person’s journey of morality and understanding, the simplistic self and not-self model of man and environment always evolves to a higher non-dualistic model.

After setting out with a simple agenda of imparting BPO and Medical Transcription training with the motto of "learning to get better," Doctus put its feet on the soil of Kavur, Andhra Pradesh, in 2007 and set up a 100-seater ITES/BPO unit in compliance with international norms in a location that had questionable-to-absent power and internet, a good 40 km from the nearest railhead, and with almost no supporting infrastructure to run a business out of. Two very challenging but successful years down the line, this humble beginning has to a great extent changed the life of the ordinary Tenali-Bapatla graduate to where he no longer needs to truck his bedding to the city to make the livelihood he aspires for. Doctus has taken the city ITES/BPO job and translocated it to the village (tier V), revolutionizing the entire village economy, in what we humbly call the hinterland of Kavur.

Ramakrishna Tummala, whose brainchild the Kavur Rural BPO project was, considers this a step towards building the environment. From a haunted village where empty houses gathered dust over furniture belonging to deceased elders of grown men in cities with 5 digit zip codes, Kavur today bustles with young men and women who are sometimes shunning the glamor of a city job (in the AP marriage market, you are nobody if you are an insurance claims adjudicator for the worlds largest but working over satellite lines from Kavur). An entire league of new economy ancillaries has sprung up. From 1 rupee shampoo sachets replacing 50 paisa ones (we are sorry, you no longer get them here in Kavur, you could try Vijaywada though) to typing institutes and computer training centers rattling with the sound of keyboards and change in the till, villages and towns around Kavur are creating a new and different environment.

At the end of the day, as our lives change and shine, as the tarnished bronze of our inner self is polished, the environment not only looks and gets better, it starts insisting on getting better and better. "Take this model," says Ramakrishna, "and apply it to any aspect of life, corporate governance, or any form of creation of value, or take it to the next village, and it will always result in the right course of action. One can learn from the organic life-force of nature and coexist and cooperate, or we can carry on doing what we have done so well for so long and destroy mankind. The choice,” emphasizes Ramakrishna, “lies with the individual.”

There are downsides, of course. Rentals are expected to turn four figure any time in the next few years. Women no longer depend on their father, brother, husband, son for their needs. In many an instance, the daughters of Kavur earn more than the rest of the family put together. Pollution and ecofriendly are becoming Telugu words in Tenali and Ponnur as vendors start putting out baskets to throw plastic and other waste into. A haircut costs more, and the barber's son is sending his son to learn computers and typing so that he can get a job in the village BPO. Neighboring village elders want a Kavur to happen closer to home. Yes, there are downsides.

We live in times where the words "environment" and "meltdown" have taken on a frightening synonymy. We, as a planet, clamor for the two degrees of our rightful coolness in the face of indifference and arrogance at the highest levels and of the highest order. We owe it to all the lives and efforts that have gone into creating this present, to our selves, and to our future to take steps to green minds, to green lives, to create leaders for tomorrow who will not blindly follow the destructive legacies that litter our history books, and to let our children know what a sparrow really looks like.

Here are some proofreading tips to help you get even better!!!

The correct attitude for a Medical Transcriptionist should be one of independence and responsibility for his or her work. Medical Transcriptionists function with a minimum of direct supervision. The majority do have an immediate supervisor somewhere responsible for quality control. Working as a professional Medical Transcriptionist means to take pride in the accuracy and completeness of your work. A professional gains satisfaction from a job well done.

Excellent proofreading skills are critical for a Medical Transcriptionist. Proofreading is looking for mistakes of all types in a transcribed document and correcting them. The most common errors a Medical Transcriptionist will be looking for include:

Omission of important dictated words
Selecting the wrong English or medical word
Misspelling words
Typographical errors
Grammatical errors
Punctuation errors

Proofreading skills will improve with practice. You will know what your areas of weaknesses are as you proofread and find your errors. If you find that you miss few medical words, but misspell many English words, you can improve by paying particular interest in English words as you transcribe and proofread dictation.

Consider the following four-step method to help you achieve the best results from your proofreading:

1. Look words up in reference books as you encounter them. Dont wait until the end of the report. You will have forgotten how some of the words sounded. Search until you find and dont go any further in your medical transcribing until you find the words you get stumped on. Leave a blank if you exhaust all resources and still cannot find your word.
2. Briefly proofread what you transcribe as it appears on the screen of your word processor or the paper you are typing on. This will help you catch missed words and typographical errors as they occur. Print out your reports on paper if you are using a word processor. It is easier to proofread the printed report on paper than it is on the screen.
3. If you just cannot find a word, leave a blank of an appropriate length, according to how long or short the word sounds. Attach a flag (a flag is a sheet of paper clipped to the report or a sticky note placed on the report which identifies all blanks, which lines of the report they are located on, and what the dictated word sounded like to you.
4. Use a medical or English spellchecker as the final step in proofreading. Spellcheckers will not catch errors such as transcribing no instead of not or transcribing ilium instead of ileum.

Excellent proofreading skills come only after continual practice to perfect. Consider the following tips:

To avoid omitting important dictated words adjust the speed control on the transcriber unit and transcribe slowly to assure no dictated words are overlooked. Slowly increase your speed of the tape, which will increase transcription speed as you learn to keep up with the dictator.

The tape recording (if you are transcribing from a tape) does not perfectly reproduce the human voice. Sometimes the words and phrases sound garbled or something quite different from what they really are. A Medical Transcriptionist should never transcribe what he or she thinks they hear. You should transcribe only what makes sense in the context of the report. Careful word searching and careful attention to word definitions help the Medical Transcriptionist to avoid selecting the wrong English or medical word. The wrong medical word can convey a wrong diagnosis for a patient. The error can be carried in the patients permanent medical record and cause extreme havoc and chaos. The professional Medical Transcriptionist NEVER transcribes anything that does not make sense and/or cannot be verified in a reference book. In other words, dont just make up a word either just to fill in all the blanks. It is better to leave a blank.

Misspelling of medical and English words can be avoided by careful proofreading and using a spellchecker.

Typographical errors are usually the result of carelessness or attempts to type too fast rather than focusing on accuracy. Careful proofreading will eliminate typographical errors.

Grammatical errors are hard to catch while transcribing and must be identified through careful proofreading.

Punctuation errors can actually change the medical meaning of a sentence. Keep your punctuation references within easy reach.

DMT2 saw several offer letters coming the way of the graduates even while they were in training. The trend continues with DMT3 with all of them being tested and interviewed by eight companies while still in training. As the close date draws nearer, the challenge for the Doctus team is to better itself in every way.

Doctus, where we learnt how to get better, started as an idea in November 2006. The first medical transcription training batch was launched on Jan 2, 2007. With time, Doctus grew, and the pioneer trainees were placed at Transdyne, Worldtech and other leading companies by the 15th of May. We waited for this before starting out this community blog. Please feel free to share your experiences and your thoughts here.
